Whatever spices and seasonings are there in it, a lot of flavours are added to it.This recipe is light, easy to digest and fully nutritious too, hence it is the choice of many people.

I add onions and tomatoes so that it remains the same as the usual basic recipe and can be easily made at home.

This is a perfect recipe for weekends which is a one pot recipe and can be prepared in less than 1 hour. You can serve this with pickle, lijjat papad, lemon pickle, mango pickle, salad.

Ingredients you'll needs:

  • 1/2 cup moong dal ( you can use spilt moong dal or masoor dal or toor dal also )
  • 1 cup rice ( you can use basmati rice or over regular rice)
  • 1 medium size onion ( finaly chopped)
  • 1 medium size tomato ( finaly chopped)
  • 1 small carrot ( chopped)
  • 1/2 cup Beans ( optional)
  • 1/2 cup Green peas( optional)
  • 1 tbsp cumin seeds ( jeera)
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder 
  • 1 inch ginger ( greated)
  • 1-3 green chillies 
  • Oil or ghee for tempering 
  • Salt to taste

Let's see how to make it step by step:

Rinse sal and rich:

Mix moong dal and rice in a bowl and wash it under boiling water till it is clean. Then soak it in water for 15-30 minutes so that your khichadi becomes very soft and takes less time to cook.

Cook dal and rice:

Add rinsed lentils and rice in a preheated cooker, add some turmeric powder and salt and let it cook for 2-3 whistles or until it becomes soft.

Prepration for tempering:

In my pan I add ghee or after heating it then add assam cumin seeds and let it sizzle. Then add assam grated ginger or green chillies and saute.

Add vegetables:

Then add chopped onion or cook until golden brown. Then add tomatoes, carrots, beans and sauté until the vegetables are soft.

Combin :

Then add cooked lentils and rice to the spices and mix until it is mixed properly. And if needed, you can adjust the consistency with water.then add salt as per taste.

Garnish and serve;

Now your moong dal khichadi is redy to serve , garnish with fresh coriander leaves and a drop of ghee . Serve it with pickle , papad and kadhi also.
